Rapper Talib Kweli has announced that his new album, Cultural Currency, will be released exclusively via Patreon. Kweli will be the first major artist to use the platform to release a full album.
While he did not reveal any other info about his upcoming project, he did provide the details of his Patreon. There are three different tiers that fans can choose between, ranging in price from $5/month to $25/month. The $5/month tier includes a monthly unreleased track/video from hip hop legends curated by Kweli as well as "Patron Only Discord" access. The $10/month and $25/month tiers include everything in the first tier as well as access to things like a new Cultural Currency track every month for 12 months, exclusive episodes of his Vibrate Higher talk show, and monthly Q&A livestreams with Kweli.
Kweli said of the partnership, “I am considered an underground rapper...I succeeded in spite of the odds because I was always able to go around the industry and connect with my fans directly. When the music industry told me no, I built an industry around myself. Working with Patreon is the next step in this evolution. Patreon was created by artists for artists." He continued, "Sharing my art on Patreon allows me to connect with my tribe in amazing and innovative ways.”
See Kweli's Patreon for the full details on the various tiers.
