Swifties had a feeling a new album announcement was on the horizon. Yesterday evening (Monday, August 11), Taylor Swift updated her website with a clock counting down to 12:12 a.m. EST on August 12. When it was time, she officially shared the title of her twelfth studio album: The Life of a Showgirl.
The album will have all-new material and is the follow up to 2024's The Tortured Poets Department and its extended edition, The Anthology. It’s currently available to pre-order on her website, though a formal release date has yet to be shared.

Per Variety, Spotify billboards started popping up in New York City and Nashville shortly after the album announcement, with a code leading to a playlist entitled “And, baby, that’s show business for you.” Though it’s a collection of Swift’s tracks, Swift fans will likely try to discern some Easter eggs from the tracklist based on prior record releases. Some have already noted that all the tracks on the playlist were produced by Max Martin and Shellback, suggesting that they could play a pivotal role in the new project.

Tomorrow (Wednesday, August 13), Swift will appear on New Heights, the podcast hosted by her boyfriend - Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce - and his brother, Jason Kelce. In a clip from the episode now posted on social media, Swift reveals a mint green briefcase with the letters “TS” in orange lettering. “I want to show you something,” Swift says. “This is my brand new album, The Life of a Showgirl.” The cover art, however, is blurred out.
The Life of a Showgirl comes after a milestone in Swift’s career. In May, she announced she had purchased her catalog of recordings initially released through Big Machine Records. She retained ownership from Shamrock Capital for a rumored nine-figure sum, revealing she will be reissuing her old albums that were first sold by Big Machine against her wishes in 2019. Also in May, a re-recorded version of “Look What You Made Me Do,” the lead single from Swift’s 2017 album, Reputation, appeared in The Handmaid’s Tale’s final season. Fans believed the needle drop was an imminent announcement of Reputation (Taylor’s Version). However, with the catalog buyback, Swift revealed a re-recorded version of her self-titled debut album is complete, while Reputation (Taylor’s Version) may remain unfinished.
In other Swift news, Searchlight Pictures recently revealed Taylor's debut feature film - which was first announced back in 2022 - is still happening. Jeff Sneider’s InSneider newsletter reports Searchlight has tapped British playwright Alice Birch to help with rewrites of Swift’s script. Birch previously served as a writer on TV shows like Succession and Normal People, and created the short-lived TV version of Dead Ringers. Birch also co-wrote the indie films Lady Macbeth, Mothering Sunday, The Wonder, and The End We Start From, as well as Lynne Ramsay’s forthcoming Jennifer Lawrence/Robert Pattinson picture Die My Love. The plot of Swift's movie, which the pop star is also set to direct, is still being kept under wraps.
