The Who Announce Final North American Shows

The Who are taking their final bows. The band has announced a North American farewell tour, dubbed "The Song Is Over Tour."

According to Pitchfork, the Who toured North America for the first time in 1967. And, in 1982, they actually went on a “farewell tour.” Peter Townshed recently told Rolling Stone, however, that it was never the band’s idea to say they’d stop touring.

“It wasn’t me that said, ‘This is the last tour.’ It was the Who’s manager,” he said. “And he did it because it was a ‘ka-ching’ moment. We sold out an arena tour. It wasn’t a very smart thing to do. I should have really protested, but I didn’t. But I felt we could go, ‘I don’t care what the manager says, I don’t care what the record company or the promoter says. If we want to get back together on a tour again, we f—in’ will.’ It just took a long time.”

The 16-show run, named for a song on The Who’s classic 1971 album, Who’s Next, will start in August. After two July concerts in Italy, the legendary band will visit cities including Newark, Atlantic City, Boston, Toronto, Philadelphia and Seattle. There's also a Madison Square Garden and Hollywood Bowl shows scheduled.

Tickets will be available during a Citi presale (citientertainment.com) and the Whooligan Fan Club starting from 10 a.m. local time May 13 through 10 p.m. local time May 15. The general on-sale begins at 10 a.m. local time May 16 at thewho.com/tour.

In other news, the Who's musical Tommy opened up on Broadway back in March 2024 and ran for four months at New York's Nederlander Theater. A national tour for the rock opera is in the works - beginning in Providence, Rhode Island. It's set to begin in the autumn of 2025.
