Wolfgang Van Halen has released "Distance," his first solo song and a tribute to the musician's late father Eddie Van Halen, who died on Oct. 6 after a long battle with cancer.
Released under the band name Mammoth WVH, the track features Wolfgang on vocals as well as all of the instruments. Although Wolfgang had previous plans to release music as Mammoth WVH, his plans changed when his father's cancer returned. Shortly after hearing that news, Wolfgang wrote "Distance."
In a statement, Wolfgang said, “While the song is incredibly personal, I think anyone can relate to the idea of having a profound loss in their life. I never intended ‘Distance’ to be the very first piece of music people would hear from me, but I also thought my father would be here to celebrate its release. This is for him. I love and miss you, Pop.”
Proceeds from the single will be donated to Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, which helps to fund musical education programs in schools. Wolfgang also released an accompanying music video for the song, which features a collection of family home movies. Wolfgang’s solo album as Mammoth WVH is expected to be released in 2021.
