Britney Spears Biopic Announced

Britney Spears made waves in October 2023 when she published her bombshell memoir, The Woman in Me. Now, the material Spears has written on the page will be adapted into a feature-length biopic.

Universal Pictures will be handling the distribution of the project. Jon M. Chu (Wicked) is set to direct and producer Marc Platt (La La Land) is also attached to develop. Spears shared the news on X (formerly Twitter) to announce the film, writing, “Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with Marc Platt. He’s always made my favorite movies...stay tuned.”

Casting has not been announced, but the internet is buzzing with ideas for who could fill the pop star's big shoes. Popular suggestions include Millie Bobby Brown, Sabrina Carpenter, Dove Cameron, Tate McRae and Sydney Sweeney.

Millie Bobby Brown specifically has shown strong interest in playing Spears. She opened up about her aspirations to hopefully portray Spears during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show in 2022, saying, "I want to play a real person and I think for me, Britney ... [It] would be Britney Spears. I think her story, first of all, resonates with me...Just growing up in the public eye watching her videos, watching interviews of how when she was younger. I mean, same thing with you," the actress continued at the time. "I see the scramble for words [in her interviews] and I don't know her, but when I look at pictures of her, I feel like I could tell her story in the right way and hers only."

News of a biopic comes during a resurgence in Spears' career. Back in November 2021, Spears’ conservatorship was terminated after a lengthy, highly publicized trial. Since then, she shared the best-selling The Woman in Me chronicling her life and the conservatorship (released alongside an audiobook version read by actor Michelle Williams) and put out two songs: the Elton John collaboration “Hold Me Closer,” which re-worked his hit “Tiny Dancer,” and “Mind Your Business” with Will.i.am. Spears’ last album was 2016’s Glory.
