Britney Spears Sells Rights to Her Music Catalogue

Pop legend Britney Spears recently sold the rights to her entire music catalogue. The news was first broken by TMZ this week (February 10), followed by subsequent reports from Rolling Stone and other media outlets.

The Spears deal reportedly was signed on December 30, according to TMZ. Although the amount Primary Wave paid for Spears’ music catalog is unknown, sources told the publication it was around the same as the $200M deal Justin Bieber secured when he sold his music to Hipgnosis Songs Capital in 2023.

Founded in 2005, Primary Wave has spent the last two decades on a catalogue asset tear, scooping up the music rights of Bob Marley, Smokey Robinson, Prince, James Brown, and Whitney Houston, among others. In 2020, Stevie Nicks sold her publishing rights to Primary Wave for $100 million.

Spears has released a total of nine studio albums, including her last record, 2016’s Glory. Her most recent release was a 2023 single with will.i.am called “Mind Your Business.”

The news of Spears' deal comes soon after her infamous 13-year conservatorship has ended. After the long "Free Britney" internet movement exposed the abuse within the conservatorship, a Los Angeles judge officially terminated it on November 12, 2021.

In other Spears news: a biopic about her life story is in the works. It will be based on her 2023 memoir The Woman In Me, and is set to be distributed by Universal.
