Center Stage on Live365 this week is VillageRadio.Net, where "Classic Alternative means Classic Hits for the Cool Kids!" We spoke with station manager RJ Jordan about their history with radio, their station's programming, and we got some music recommendations. Check out the interview below!
What made you get started in radio?
I won an album from a college radio station in 1984 and was amazed by visiting the station when I picked up my prize. I've been in radio ever since, working at 25 stations, with 8 Program Director posts.
What brought you to Live365?
I wanted to have a radio outlet for fun, not for career.
What's your favorite part about running your own radio station?
It has to be allowing my industry friends and retired broadcasters to host shows on the station.
Tell us about your station's programming. What can listeners expect when they tune in to your station?
Classic alternative from the 70s and 80s. We call it "Classic Hits for the Cool Kids." We're currently staffed for 12 hours on weekends, and 7 hours every weekday. All jocks execute our format, as there are no specialty shows. The current lineup is:
- Weekdays:
- Noon to 3pm ET: Psycho Blonde
- 3 to 7pm ET: Jamie Turner
- Weekends:
- Shows Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 3pm ET
- Timing varies, but hosts include:
- Mo
- Derek
- Kevin
- Dave
Name one artist that you play on your station that is underrated in your opinion.
The Psychedelic Furs, and their most underrated song is "No Tears."
What's your favorite music memory/moment?
My first concert - Elvis Costello at the Cape Cod Coliseum in the summer of '83. I've seen him a dozen times since!
Please list your top 5 or 10 songs, with a brief reason why the songs made your list.
These are the epitome of the Classic Alternative format. I have great memories of playing them on college radio when they were current or recent releases.
The 5 Most Played Songs on VillageRadio.Net are:
- "Words" - Missing Persons
- "Change"- Tears For Fears
- "The Ghost in You" - The Psychedelic Furs
- "Blue Monday '88" - New Order
- "The Metro" - Berlin
