Happy World Radio Day 2019!

Today, Wednesday, February 13, is World Radio Day 2019! World Radio Day is observed annually to celebrate radio as a medium. Every year there is a different theme and this year's theme is "Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace." Furthermore, the focus of World Radio Day this year is "the power of radio in promoting understanding and strong communities."

Aside from celebrating radio as a medium, the day is also dedicated to improving international cooperation between broadcasters, and to encouraging major networks and community radio alike to promote access to information, freedom of expression, and gender equality over the airwaves.

All around the world there are events being held today to mark the day. The biggest event is at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris where radio stations from around the world come together "to gain hands-on experience of radio production," and this year, "to celebrate the impact of radio in the pursuit of a more peaceful and tolerant world."

World Radio Day was created on November 3, 2011 by UNESCO's 36th General Conference after originally being proposed by the Kingdom of Spain. February 13 marks the day in 1946 that the United Nations Radio (UN Radio) was established.
