Janet Jackson Documentary Sets Release Date & Drops New Extended Trailer

JANET - the two-part, four-hour documentary about Janet Jackson's life and career - will finally get its television premiere this month.

A&E and Lifetime announced a premiere date for the first part of JANET, along with a new extended trailer. Part one of JANET will air on Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT

JANET includes exclusive archival footage, home videos and celebrity interviews. Stars like Missy Elliott, Mariah Carey, Whoopi Goldberg, Janelle Monae, Regina King, Samuel L. Jackson, and others can all be seen in the new trailer.

The release date for part one of JANET arrives on the 40th anniversary of Jackson’s 1982 self-titled debut album. Lifetime and A&E announced the film last fall, along with a brief teaser. The four-hour documentary has been in the works for five years, and includes never-before-seen footage from Jackson’s professional and personal life, as well as footage of Jackson discussing the 2004 Super Bowl “wardrobe malfunction,” her relationship with her late brother Michael, and more.

Janet Jackson executive produced JANET alongside her brother Randy Jackson. The film was directed by Ben Hirsch and co-produced by Workerbee and Associated Entertainment Corporation. Rick Murray is also credited as executive producer for Workerbee, and Brie Miranda Bryant is credited as executive producer for A+E Networks.

Last November, FX and Hulu aired the New York Times Presents documentary titled Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson. That doc specifically focused on Jackson and Justin Timberlake’s 2004 halftime show controversy. In March of last year, a selection of Jackson’s work was archived in the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry.
