On Monday (June 28), for the "Kellyoke" segment of Kelly Clarkson's self-titled television show, the singer performed her own rendition of Soft Cell's 1981 hit "Tainted Love."
To make the song her own, Kelly added a bit of her signature Southern soul, swapped the gender pronouns, and showed off her belting abilities. The song was given the full band treatement on her studio's stage.
Clarkson’s cover came after she won another two Daytime Emmys on Friday. Her television show won awards for Outstanding Talk Show and Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host — an award she also won last year.
Soft Cell's 1981 version of "Tainted Love" came from their debut Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret. The song hit No. 1 around the world and No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Soft Cell's take was a cover of a song originally recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964.
