Kendrick Lamar Surprise Drops New Album 'GNX'

Months of rumors have come true. Just after his seven GRAMMY Award nominations and before he is set to perform at the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show, Kendrick Lamar has surprise dropped a brand new studio album called GNX.

GNX follows 2022’s LP Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, and comes months after Kendrick's viral Drake diss track "Not Like Us." GNX does not include "Not Like Us" on its tracklist, but it does feature twelve new songs - one of them being "heart pt. 6" (a follow-up to "The Heart Part 5" from his last album), two collaborations with SZA called "luther" and "gloria," a ditty with AZChike called "peekaboo," and a bop featuring Sam Dew named "dodger blue."

The title track also includes vocals from Peysoh and Hitta J3. There were reports Taylor Swift would make an appearance on an upcoming Kendrick album, but those rumors seem to be untrue regarding this LP. (Sorry, Swifties.)

GNX is Kendrick's first record released outside the umbrella of Top Dawg Entertainment. Today (November 22, 2024) at 11:30 EST, he shared the album trailer to his YouTube channel. Thirty minutes later, he dropped the full album on all music streaming platforms at random.

Lamar’s music is usually released slowly and purposefully, but this year he’s dropped four singles: “6:16 in L.A.,” “Euphoria,” “Meet the Grahams” and “Not Like Us." The releases centered around an unusually aggressive beef with Drake, following the Canadian rapper’s lyric that characterized himself, Lamar and J. Cole as equals. The comment seemed to set off Lamar in a way he previously had not done in his career, beginning with his guest verse with Future and Metro Boomin on “Like That,” which was also a major hit single this year. Variety reports that during his beef era, Lamar worked with a number of different producers - including his longtime collaborator Sounwave as well as Jack Antonoff, the Alchemist, Sean Momberger and others.

Lamar's GRAMMY nominations for 2025 include Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song ("Like That"), as well as Best Rap Performance, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap Song and Best Music Video for "Not Like Us." His Super Bowl performance will happen in New Orleans on February 9.

GNX is available for listening on multiple streaming platforms. As for physical copies of the record, details await.
