Kendrick Lamar to Release Fifth Studio Album This May

Kendrick Lamar has announced his fifth studio album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. It comes approximately five years since his last record, and has a release date less than a month away: May 13.

The acclaimed rapper tweeted the album announcement in response to a February tweet from a user that read, “Kendrick Lamar is officially retired.” Lamar quoted the tweet with a link to his Oklama website, which consists of a blank webpage with two folders. The newest folder (in the center) contains a scan of a statement on pgLang letterhead. “The following statement was released today by oklama, through his company, pgLang at 11:00am PT in Los Angeles, CA,” it reads. Below that sentence, information about the new album can be found.

It isn't the first time Kendrick has signed his name as Oklama. Back in August of last year, Lamar released an open letter stating he would be revealing a new project, and it would be his last album with Top Dawg Entertainment. He also signed that writing as Oklama.

"As I produce my final TDE album," Lamar wrote, "I feel joy to have been a part of such a cultural imprint after 17 years...May the Most High continue to use Top Dawg as a vessel for candid creators. As I continue to pursue my life’s calling."

The album will follow Lamar’s Pulitzer Prize and Grammy-winning project DAMN., which celebrated its five-year anniversary four days ago (April 14). These days, Lamar has been busy with his mysterious pgLang company alongside Dave Free, which has announced two signees: Baby Keem and Tanna Leong. They've also announced a handful of projects involving various artists and brands.

In other Lamar news, back in February, episodes featuring the rapper were released as part of the The Big Hit Show podcast. The five parts saw him reflecting on his experience creating To Pimp a Butterfly. And of course, February also saw Lamar perform alongside Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent, and Eminem during the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
