Lizzo Wins First Emmy for 'Watch Out For the Big Grrrls'

One of the biggest moments of last night's Emmy Awards (September 12) happened when Lizzo won the prize for Outstanding Competition Program for her Amazon Prime show, Watch Out For the Big Grrrls. The win is notable for dethroning VH1's RuPaul's Drag Race (which previously won the category across four consecutive years), and putting Lizzo halfway to EGOT status.

“I’m very emotional,” Lizzo tearfully announced on stage when accepting her award, standing alongside her Watch Out for the Big Grrrls collaborators. “The trophy is nice, but my emotion is for these people who are on this stage with me. The stories that they share are not that unique. They just don’t get the platform. Telling stories, let’s tell more stories.”

Lizzo's win also led to one of the most memorable quotes of the night: "When I was a little girl, all I wanted was to see me in the media. Someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me. If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something, I'd be like, 'You’re gon' see that person, but b----, it’s gon' have to be you.'”

Lizzo finished her heartfelt speech with a shoutout to the Big Grrrls themselves, who were cheering her on from the audience. "L-I-Z-Z-O-B-I-G-G-G-R-L-S. We the best!" Lizzo cheered just before leaving the stage. Her Emmy win marks her first nomination and first win at the award ceremony.

In the Amazon Prime Video reality competition show, the three-time Grammy winner searched for backup dancers for her tour amongst a talented group of plus-sized women of color. The show was released back in March.

The Emmy win is just another bullet point in an achievement-heavy year for Lizzo. Besides releasing Watch Out For the Big Grrrls, Lizzo put out her sophomore album Special in July (which included the #1 single "About Damn Time") and launched her shapewear brand, Yitty, in April. Next up, a documentary about Lizzo's life and career is set to drop on HBO Max.
