Major Record Labels Sign Pact to Become Carbon Neutral by 2050

Major record labels in the music industry are taking a stand against climate change. Sony, Universal, and Warner have signed a pact to halve carbon emissions by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2050, joining a group of other independent labels setting the same or more urgent targets.

Previously, indie labels Beggars Group, Warp, Ninja Tune, Secretly Group, and more pledged their commitment to the cause. Now, major labels are joining their indie counterparts in signing the Music Climate Pact. The pact addresses activities such as touring, vinyl manufacturing, and even music streaming, which are unsustainably carbon-intensive at current levels.

Under the pact, the companies promise to measure carbon emissions across the industry, encourage artists to be more climate conscious and speak out on climate change, and work with streaming companies to track and reduce subsidiary emissions relating to music listening.

The pact is inspired by the climate summit COP26 and was developed with the UN Environment Programme. That group works in tandem with Science Based Targets Initiative and the Race to Zero SME Climate Commitment. Each signatory music label will be held accountable by one or the other scheme, and have until February 2022 to choose which group they will be bound to.
