Olivia Rodrigo to Recount Creation of ‘SOUR’ in New Disney+ Doc

For those wondering how Olivia Rodrigo rose to fame so quickly, a new documentary charting her meteoric rise will soon be released. Olivia Rodrigo: Driving Home 2 U (a SOUR film) will be debuting exclusively on Disney+ March 25.

Directed by Stacey Lee and produced by Interscope Films and Supper Club, the film will feature personal stories, behind-the-scenes clips, never-before-seen footage in and out of the studio, and intimate interviews with Rodrigo.

As for the doc's format, the title - which is also a reference to the hit track that started it all, "drivers license" - speaks to how viewers will see Rodrigo's journey. According to the doc's press release, the film will chronicle Rodrigo's road trip from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles, when she started writing SOUR. She will recount how she made her Grammy-nominated debut record, including how she felt navigating her life at the time.

The documentary will also feature some new arrangements of Rodrigo's tracks and 11 live performances in unique locations. Guest appearances will include Jacob Collier, Blu DeTiger, and Towa Bird.

“This is a unique film experience where for the first time, fans will understand how her album came to be and why it was such a personal journey for Olivia,” said Ayo Davis, Disney Branded Television president, in a statement. “This is not a concert film per se, but really, an opportunity to experience firsthand how Olivia Rodrigo became one of the biggest music stars of the day – and a chance to see her perform the songs from SOUR like never before.”

Driving Home 2 U is such a unique and fresh approach to a music film, and that’s just what we’ve come to expect from Olivia,” added John Janick, chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M and Interscope Films. “It’s an authentic look into her creative process, her incredible drive and who she is as an artist and person. We’re so proud to have co-produced this film with Supper Club and are thrilled that it has found a home on Disney+.”

In other Olivia Rodrigo news, the pop star is prepping a North American and European tour that will kick off in April. She's also nominated for seven 2022 Grammys, including the “Big Four” categories: Best New Artist and Album, Song, and Record of the Year.
