Yesterday (January 23), nominations for the 2025 Academy Awards were announced. They were shared by actors Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. For the music categories (Best Original Score and Best Original Song), films Emilia Pérez, Sing Sing, The Brutalist, Conclave, Wicked, and more are in the running this year.
Starting with Best Original Song: Emilia Pérez seems to have the advantage in the category, with two tracks nominated ("El Mal", sung by Zoe Saldaña, and Selena Gomez's "Mi Camino"). Besides that, the songs "The Journey" (The Six Triple Eight), "Like a Bird" (Sing Sing) and "Never Too Late" (Elton John: Never Too Late) received nods this year.
The category for Best Original Score is a bit more competitive. Emilia Pérez is also recognized there, but it's in the ring with films such as The Brutalist, Conclave, Wicked, and The Wild Robot. The composers for those pictures include Daniel Blumberg (The Brutalist), Volker Bertelmann (Conclave), Clément Ducol and Camille (Emilia Pérez), and Kris Bowers (The Wild Robot). In the case of Wicked: while Stephen Schwartz originally composed the music for the Broadway musical, he is nominated alongside John Powell for the Oscar this year.
In a break from tradition, the Original Song category will forgo live performances of the nominated songs – a staple of Oscars ceremonies past – to respect those impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires. Instead, the ceremony will spotlight the songwriters through personal reflections and behind-the-scenes insights from the creative teams behind the music.
At the 2024 Oscars, Billie Eilish and Finneas won the award for Best Original Song ("What Was I Made For?" from Greta Gerwig's Barbie), and Ludwig Göransson took home the prize for Best Original Score (Oppenheimer). Live performances were given by Eilish and Finneas, Jon Batiste, Becky G, Scott George and the Osage Tribal Singers, and Ryan Gosling.
The 97th Academy Awards will be held March 2 in Los Angeles, at the Dolby Theatre. You can watch on ABC at 7pm EST/4 PST.
