Ever wonder what the 1978 disco classic "I Will Survive" would sound like if it were made for a dystopian movie? Perfume Genius - a.k.a. Mike Hadreas - just gave us an answer to that question.
Hadreas shared his grim cover of the song through his Substack newsletter, writing, “I suppose the cover is a little deathbed-y, I was very serious that day, but i like how it turned out. In particular the last moment… i might stretch that in to something new.”
The cover was recorded at home and created for a commercial pitch. The commercial never came to fruition, and it is yet to be revealed by Hadreas what the commercial was for.
The haunting cover is accompanied by a visual, which is comprised of a grainy old Bowflex commercial and forest fire footage. Despite its slowness, the cover is actually shorter than Gaynor's original song, as its runtime is 3 minutes and 12 seconds while Gaynor's is 3 minutes and 18 seconds.
After he dropped Set My Heart On Fire Immediately in 2020 and released the IMMEDIATELY Remixes in March, Mike Hadreas covered Richard Youngs’ “A Fullness of Light in Your Soul” with the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble in June. He is set to tour the western half of the United States this fall.
