Bo Burnham may just be a comedy musician, but that doesn't mean influential artists can't cover his songs. Namely, Phoebe Bridgers has released a cover of Bo Burnham’s “That Funny Feeling,” which she’s been performing on her fall tour of the United States.
Her cause for covering the melancholic and dissociative song is appropriate. Proceeds for the Bandcamp Friday track benefit Texas Abortion Funds, which splits money between ten different organizations in the state.
“This one’s for [Republican Texas Governor] Greg Abbott,” Bridgers said in a statement. Last month, Abbott passed the country’s most restrictive abortion laws. It has led to controversy not just in the United States, but across the world. Additionally, it has sparked activism for women's rights and reproductive rights.
Bridgers and Burnham got the chance to duet the song on August 4. Burnham made an unannounced appearance while Bridgers was performing at Largo at the Coronet in Los Angeles - the city where Burnham resides.
“I’m gonna play a song I wish I wrote,” Bridgers said to the audience of 280 people. “I know I love something when it fills me with rage.”
The acoustic track "That Funny Feeling" appears in Burnham’s Netflix special Inside, which was released May 30, 2021 and was recently nominated for Outstanding Music and Original Lyrics and Outstanding Variety Special at the Emmys. While Burnham lost both awards (prompting some fans to claim he was "robbed"), the songs from the special have been trending all across social media and critics have hailed the film as a masterpiece.
