Nigerian drummer Tony Allen has a new album coming with the late trumpeter and father of South African jazz, Hugh Masekela. Entitled Rejoice, the album is due out March 20 via World Circuit Records.
In 2010, Allen and Masekela both found themselves touring in the UK and took the opportunity to record together after having talked about working with each other for decades. The unfinished original tapes lived in the archive until summer 2019, roughly a year and a half after Masekela passed.
With the blessing and participation of Masekela's estate as well as some help from the producer the two had originally worked with, Nick Gold, Allen and Gold finished recording the album in the same London studio they recorded the tapes in. Allen and Masekela are accompanied on the record by jazz musicians Tom Herbert, Joe Armon-Jones, Mutale Chashi, and Steve Williamson.
The first single from the album "We've Landed" is out now.
