Doot doola doot doo! Any music lover who's a music lover knows and respects the incredible Canadian journalist that is Nardwuar. With every Nardwuar interview you're guaranteed fun, weirdness, meaningful gifts, and FBI interrogation-level questions that shock the interviewees.
Nardwuar the Human Serviette (real name: John Ruskin) got his start in media at the University of British Columbia radio station CITR 101.9 FM in Vancouver. His show has been running every Friday afternoon since October 1987. In addition to being a part of the band the Evaporators, he's had the privilege of interviewing several celebrities – including up-and-coming rappers, movie stars, and late artists such as Kurt Cobain, Juice WRLD, and Mac Miller.
A Nardwuar interview can go either two ways: it impresses and flatters the interviewee (Drake described his interview with Nardwuar as the "best that I've ever done in my entire life") or it disturbs and angers them because of how much his research hits home. For this list, we're recognizing the 10 most legendary interviews Nardwuar has ever done. Let's get started!
10. Nardwuar vs. J. Cole (2021)
We'll never forget how much attention this 58-minute interview garnered when it was first dropped! "Nardwuar vs. J. Cole" was released on Christmas in 2021. It starts off two years before the actual interview takes place, during the Day N Vegas music festival in 2019. We see Nardwuar ask J. Cole for an interview, and the rap star promises the Human Serviette some time once the new year hits. It endes up being two years later instead of one (thanks a lot, COVID-19 pandemic), but the wait was worth it, because the interview is remarkably deep and entertaining.
The best part of the chat happens right after the 43-minute mark, when Nardwuar asks, "J. Cole, did you tell Dr. Dre about Kendrick?" J. Cole looks at Nardwuar in stunned silence for a solid 15 seconds and you can see a whole range of emotions play out on his face before he hilariously mutters, "Who told you that?"
9. Nardwuar vs. A$AP Rocky
This Nardwuar interview isn't so much revered for its deep questions – rather, this is a fan-favorite interview due to the energy a young A$AP Rocky and his crew brings. Uploaded in 2012, Nardwuar vs. A$AP Rocky was conducted while the "F--kin' Problems" rapper appeared at the SXSW music festival. It sees A$AP calling Nardwuar a "psychic genius" and talking about a tattoo shop in Harlem he frequents.
"Nardwuar vs. A$AP Rocky" is certainly an interview you need to watch until the end. Every Nardwuar interview ends with the quirky Canadian journalist freezing while smiling at the camera, but Nardwuar's goofy paralyzed state goes on for an extended period of time. It allows the A$AP crew to dance in front of him, adorn him with a gold chain, and more.
8. Nardwuar vs. Rico Nasty
We love "Nardwuar vs. Rico Nasty" because it beautifully shows off Rico's bold personality! We'll admit: you'll probably have to turn the volume on your device down due to all the screaming. But this interview is so heartfelt and amusing, you won't mind.
Nardwuar's gifts in this particular interview are top-tier. Some of the items include a Joan Jett record with a vintage promo picture, an original Smiths vinyl, a rare Cheech and Chong record with the rolling paper still inside (Rico considers using it to roll up joints before deciding to keep it), and some Old Bay seasoning! We hope Rico got to use it for some crabs after the interview.
7. Nardwuar vs. Juice WRLD
One of those Nardwuar interviews that we're very glad happened before it was too late. Nardwuar is able to get a very intelligent, wholesome, and respectful interview out of the late Juice WRLD, and several of the questions delve into facts from the rapper's early school years.
We particularly love Juice's astonished reactions and the questions about his high school radio show performance and love for the YA novel I Am Number Four. The most poignant part of the chat comes at the end, when Juice tells the audience to "Stay positive, no matter how negative life gets" and expresses how much he cares about his fans.
6. Nardwuar vs. Kendrick Lamar
Not only is it cool to watch a baby Kendrick Lamar answer questions, but his reactions in this thing make it one of Nardwuar's best. For "Nardwuar vs. Kendrick Lamar," the Canadian journalist starts with several aspects from Lamar's childhood in Compton: including his neighborhood Rite-Aid and a local chicken joint he would hit up.
However, things amp up real quick once Nardwuar asks about an old friend of Lamar’s from the seventh grade. The stunned Lamar can only turn to a pal offscreen in disbelief and stare at Nardwuar with a very suspicious glare. Once the interview has concluded, Lamar still asks about his seventh grade friend. But of course, Nardwuar doesn't answer. A magician never reveals his secrets!
5. Nardwuar vs. Mac Miller
Just like with the Juice WRLD interview, we get to see the late Mac Miller in a bright, happy mood in "Nardwuar vs. Mac Miller." Not that Miller was ever camera shy, but something about the high energies of both Nardwuar and Miller make for wonderful chemistry. Much to Miller's delight, Nardwuar delves into local sandwich spots and Mac’s appearance on a local news channel. There's also a crash course on the rare Big L records and Pittsburgh rap groups like Strict Flow and The Govament.
"Nardwuar vs. Mac Miller" is a lovely snapshot of the Pittsburgh artist before he hit his prime. The most poignant moments in "Nardwuar vs. Mac Miller" come when the rapper is thrown off guard by an interesting question. It's fun to watch him seemingly jump out of his skin and yell in glee. We also love how Mac feeds off his friends and picks up Nardwuar during his ending freeze-frame.
4. Nardwuar vs. Questlove
Questlove, a big Nardwuar fan, thought his interview would be a breeze. He states he's been waiting for an interview with him for a long time. But alas, Nardwuar still manages to shock him within the first 40 seconds of the conversation with a Motortown Revue poster. Questlove bursts into belly laughter. And then he does it again, and again, and again.
What makes "Nardwuar vs. Questlove" so special is the fact that Questlove looks like he's having the time of his life all throughout it. "Is this the jackpot moment for you, when you catch us all off guard?" Questlove asks Nardwuar, "'Cause right now I've been prepping myself like, 'I'm not gonna get caught, I don't care what he pulls. He can pull Michael Jackson back from the dead.'" If you enjoy the 9-minute interview, you'll be pleased to know there's also a 46-minute version of it, too!
3. Nardwuar vs. Lil Uzi Vert (2018)
Now we're getting into the really good stuff. Nardwuar managed to get a talk with Lil Uzi Vert in 2018, and it led to one of the most famous moments in Nardwuar interviewing history. Things begin innocently enough, until Nardwuar reveals a Rob Zombie poster for Uzi. After a silly screech from the rapper, he starts getting wary of Nardwuar's research. "I'm glad I'm a good guy, 'cause if I was under investigation or something I'd be scared right now," Uzi says. After a few more seconds, he exclaims that he can't do the interview, then ducks under the camera and runs out of the room.
Nardwuar chases Uzi outside the venue, where he hops into a car and rides away. But not before giving a "doot doo" and correcting Nardwuar by telling him he's supposed to be standing still. Fortunately, all is well and good between the rapper and journalist, as they did another interview in 2023.
2. Nardwuar vs. Snoop Dogg (2010)
This is considered one of the greatest interviews ever done by Nardwuar, not simply because of the information or reactions, but for the friendly atmosphere Snoop brings. The best reaction comes when Nardwuar gifts an old VHS of Snoop Dogg’s dating back to 1996. Snoop is genuinely touched by the gift and talks about it for quite some time. He even claims that he had been desperately searching for it, but to no avail.
The crazy thing is, the 2010 "Nardwuar vs. Snoop Dogg" was not the first time the journalist had interviewed the California rapper. Previous exchanges had happened in 2000, 2002, and 2007. In total, Nardwuar has done 10 interviews with Snoop – including one in 2023. We can't wait for the next one!
1. Nardwuar vs. N.E.R.D.
This lead to the greatest reaction in a Nardwuar interview: Pharrell Williams, a generally cool and collected man, exclaiming, "This is one of the most impressive interviews I've ever experienced in my life."
While Shay Haley of N.E.R.D. has some good reactions, most of the video's charm comes from Pharrell. Nardwuar shows Pharrell numerous vinyl albums, and the artist gets increasingly amazed at the reveals. Once Nardwuar shows Pharrell the "Rump Shaker" record (an early song from Pharrell's career that he contributed to lyrically), the legendary artist pays him nothing but respect and compliments. Pharrell said it best: Nardwuar's research is second to none.
