Tyler, the Creator Releases 'Chromakopia' & Shares New Music Video 'Thought I Was Dead'

It's here! After a short period of promotion and hype, Tyler, the Creator's seventh studio album, Chromakopia, has been released.

The self-produced Call Me If You Get Lost follow-up features Childish Gambino, Schoolboy Q, Teezo Touchdown, Daniel Caesar, Doechii, Lil Wayne, Glorilla, and Sexyy Red.

Any Tyler album is chock full of great samples, and Chromakopia is no exception. Samples on this LP include Zambian musician Paul Ngozi on “Noid,” Q-Tip and James Brown on “Darlin, I,” People’s Pleasure With Alive and Well on “Take Your Mask Off,” and Luke on “Balloon.”

Tyler, the Creator teased Chromakopia with a string of self-directed videos: “St. Chroma,” the Ayo Edebiri–featuring “Noid,” and ads for the LP's vinyl and tour. Tyler unconventionally decided to release the album early Monday morning, explaining on social media, “YOU CAN LISTEN TO IT WHEN YOU WAKE UP, YOU DONT HAVE TO DEPRIVE YOURSELF OF SLEEP FOR SOMETHING THAT IS GOING TO BE THERE WHEN YOU WAKE UP*.”

At a recent Chromakopia listening event in Los Angeles, Tyler linked the album’s themes to wisdom passed down from his mother. “Now that I’m 33, all that stuff is like ‘oh that’s what the f–k she was talking about,” he said. “‘Oh, I’m not the guy I was at 20. Oh s--t, people are getting older, folks having kids and families.’ All I’ve got is a new Ferrari, that does feel kind of weird. I’ve got a grey hair on my chest. Life is life. I just wanted to write about stuff I think about when I’m dolo’ing."

To celebrate the album's release, Tyler has dropped a new music video for the song "Thought I Was Dead." Another noir-colored visual, it sees the musician spitting bars on the wings of a parked airplane. Like his other videos, "Thought I Was Dead" is also self-directed.

Tyler will tour behind the album next year, with stops in three continents. The trek begins February 4, in St. Paul, Minnesota, and lasts all the way through the fall, ending on September 4 in Perth, Australia. Opening most of the shows are Lil Yachty and Paris Texas. You can find tickets for the tour here.
