The 2023 VMAs were broadcast last night (September 12) from the Prudential Center in New Jersey. It featured performances and award wins from the biggest names in music.
Unsurprisingly, the night belonged to the award-winning juggernaut that is Taylor Swift. Swift led the pack this year both in nominations and wins, with eight nods all surrounding 2022’s video for “Anti-Hero.” She won seven of her eight main categories, only losing Best Editing to Olivia Rodrigo's "Vampire." In total, Swift ended the night with nine awards.
According to a source from Vegas Insider, Swift broke 9 historic records. To name a few, she extended her record as the artist with the most Video of the Year trophies (4), she became the most awarded female artist in one night (9 wins), and she became the second most awarded artist in the VMAs history with 23 wins, only behind Beyonce. Swift's run last night was notable, because she was just one award win off from breaking the single-night record. That title goes to Peter Gabriel, who won 10 awards for "Sledgehammer" back in 1987.
Other than Swift, hostess Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, and Lana Del Rey also had good nights. Minaj won a record fifth award for Best Hip-hop for “Super Freaky Girl.” She previously won for “Super Bass” (2011), “Anaconda” (2015), “Chun-Li” (2018), and “Do We Have a Problem” (2022). With the win, Minaj pulls away from Drake, who is now in second place with three wins in the category.
Minaj's "Barbie World" collaborator Ice Spice was the recipient of the Best New Artist award. Her win marks the sixth consecutive year a female artist has won in the category. Ice Spice follows Cardi B (2018), Billie Eilish (2019), Doja Cat (2019), Olivia Rodrigo (2021), and Dove Cameron (2022).
Last but not least, Lana Del Rey finally won her first VMA. She beat out Boygenius, Paramore, Blink-182, Fall Out Boy, and Thirty Seconds to Mars to win the award for "Candy Necklace," her collaboration with Jon Batiste.
Other noteworthy events during this year's ceremony included NSYNC reuniting for the first time in a decade (they presented Taylor Swift with the award for Best Pop), Shakira's Video Vanguard Award speech and performance, and the 50 years of hip-hop tribute performance. It's important to note that for the first time since the introduction of the 4 main award categories at the VMAs (Video of the Year, Best New Artist, Song of the Year and Artist of the Year), all of those categories were won by women. Ice Spice won Best New Artist, while Taylor Swift took home the other three.
