Billie Eilish Performs 'What Was I Made For?' and 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' on 'SNL'

'Tis the season of Barbie! And that means Kate McKinnon and Billie Eilish appeared on Saturday Night Live over the weekend (December 16). Focusing on Eilish in particular, the Grammy-winning artist spent her third show performing two songs and appearing in two sketches alongside McKinnon.

Eilish performed her Barbie song “What Was I Made For?” accompanied by her brother, Finneas, on piano. Eilish sang in front of a montage of old footage featuring past and present Saturday Night Live cast members. The track was introduced by director Greta Gerwig and Kate McKinnon, who played 'Weird Barbie' in the movie.

For her second musical number, Eilish covered the Judy Garland holiday standard “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Finneas reprised his role on piano, and a jazz band – which included American jazz bassist Christian McBride – accompanied Eilish. She performed the soothing rendition of the song with a beautiful view of the Empire State Building and the lights of NYC in the background. The cover ended with some snowflakes dropping onto the stage.

As for sketches, Eilish appeared in the folky musical sketch “Tampon Farm” and the adorable “Whiskers R We”: a bit where she and McKinnon helmed a cat shelter in matching glasses and perms. Eilish's guest slot follows recent appearances from Olivia Rodrigo, Noah Kahan, Tate McRae, and Boygenius. Eilish last visited Saturday Night Live in 2021, when she served as both host and musical guest. She made her debut on the show in 2019 alongside host Woody Harrelson.

As for other Billie Eilish news, “What Was I Made For?” is nominated for five awards at the 2024 Grammy Awards: Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Song Written for Visual Media, and Best Music Video. It’s also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Song for a Motion Picture, and Troye Sivan covered the emotional tune for his BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge performance in October.
