Gemma Laurence Announces Third Album & Shares 'Bloodlines' Music Video

Sapphic folk artist Gemma Laurence has announced her third album. We Were Bodies Underwater is out this summer via Main Factor / Mad Dragon Records. With the album announcement, Laurence has dropped the lead single "Bloodlines" along with a music video directed by Ross Page.

According to a press release acquired by Live365, We Were Bodies Underwater will follow the arc of two lovers’ lives. Laurence will paint a series of nine vignettes with visceral detail: the skin’s first shock of desire, the tongue’s taste of blood, the stomach’s pit of longing. "The album will pull listeners into a universe where the past bleeds into the present, where the streets of Brooklyn melt into the open Oklahoma plains, and where nothing is ever truly forgotten," the release states.

"I'm so excited to finally be able to announce my third album," Laurence tells Live365. "We Were Bodies Underwater is definitely a departure from my previous work – it's got more of a gritty alt rock sound to it, but with a country twang. It's very raw. The lead single "Bloodlines" really captures the essence of the record – the song is about how the past is never really forgotten, how our trauma stays with us whether we like it or not. It's about learning how to love someone while also reckoning with that truth."

"Bloodlines" is a story of nostalgia and trauma, centered around two lovers intertwined in each others’ grasp. "You've got a big heart, in spite of it all," Laurence repeats in the chorus as banjo rhythms, pedal steel melodies, and even some electric guitar riffs swirl around her twangy voice.

The music video for the single is shot on Super 8 footage and was co-written / produced by Ross Page and Laurence. It shows Laurence and a lover happily building a new home together...until things grow increasingly dark. A cereal box full of nails, burning flowers, and even a white snake make appearances.

Laurence's last record was 2022's Lavender. That same year, she was featured in a Live365 Emerging Artist Interview and was included in our list, "10 LGBTQ+ Artists You Should Know in 2023." After the release of Lavender, she spent the next two years touring - playing several shows in New York City - and writing.
