Following the release of their song back in June, Gorillaz and Thundercat have shared the official music video for "Cracker Island" today (July 28).
The video, which was directed by Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett, follows animated bandmates Russel Hobbs, Murdoc Niccals, 2-D, and Noodle into a Los Angeles hospital. Thundercat appears as colorful holographic figures as he plays his bass and sings backup vocals.
“Think of it as the final scene in the movie, the bit after the grand finale when the hero (me) is about to stride into the sunset, credits rolling,” Murdoc shared in a statement. “That’s right, we’re starting at the end. Why? COS I WORK IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS.”
"Cracker Island" marks the band’s first release since last year’s surprise EP Meanwhile. Gorillaz’s latest album, Song Machine: Season One - Strange Timez, was released in 2020, and featured guest contributions from Beck, St. Vincent, Elton John, the Cure’s Robert Smith, EarthGang, GoldLink, and more.
As for Thundercat, the artist is currently on a North American tour and recently provided a cover of the song "Fly Like An Eagle" for the Minions: the Rise of Gru soundtrack. He also received a credit on Kendrick Lamar's critically-acclaimed record Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.
