What a night we had last night! The 2024 Grammy Awards were held at Los Angeles' Crypto.com Arena on Sunday (February 4) night. Trevor Noah once again hosted, and winners included SZA, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Joni Mitchell, Billie Eilish, and more.
Starting off with Swift: the artist made headlines for her Midnights Album of the Year win (she made history by becoming the first person to win the award four times) and surprised Swifties with the announcement of her eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Department. Taylor Swift's website being down ended up being a red herring. Fans expected the formal announcement of Reputation (Taylor's Version). But instead, Swift shared details of her new record as she accepted Best Pop Vocal Album for Midnights at the Grammys. Album artwork was posted onto her Instagram just moments later.
As for other "Big Four" wins – Billie Eilish and Finneas took home the Song of the Year award for their emotional Barbie ballad "What Was I Made For?" Newcomer Victoria Monét snagged a much-deserved Best New Artist trophy, no doubt aided by her hit song "On My Mama." And most notably, Miley Cyrus received her first ever Grammy for "Flowers."
Cyrus received the Record of the Year trophy and danced with Billie Eilish a bit before reaching the stage to claim her prize. She thanked her collaborators, her "main gays" for making her look so good, her mother Tish Cyrus, and all her loved ones before joking that she didn't forget to thank anyone — but "might've forgotten underwear."
Other big wins included SZA for Best R&B Song with "Snooze" (she was the most nominated artist of the night), Joni Mitchell receiving Best Folk Album, Jack Antonoff getting the Producer of the Year, Non-Classical award for the third consecutive time, Lainey Wilson being honored with the Best Country Album Grammy, Karol G gaining the first Grammy of her career with Best Musica Urbana, and Paramore winning two Grammy awards without leaving their house. (The group celebrated the wins on Instagram, sharing a photo of themselves with a tiny cake reading "winner." In a second slide, they revealed they were also prepared with a "loser" cake – just in case.)
A very talked-about moment from the night was JAY-Z's honest Dr. Dre Global Impact Award acceptance speech. He brought his daughter Blue Ivy along to the stage to collect the award. While the Brooklyn rapper did throw some shade – calling out the Recording Academy for snubbing Beyoncé on Record of the Year and telling the crowd of artists "some of you don't belong in the category" – he also said some heartfelt words.
"Keep showing up . . . until they give you all those accolades you feel you deserve," he said.
As for the night's live performances, we were treated with songs from SZA, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus, Tracy Chapman & Luke Combs, Joni Mitchell, Olivia Rodrigo, Travis Scott, Burna Boy, Billy Joel, U2, Stevie Wonder, Fantasia Burrino, Annie Lennox, and many more. You can find a full list of performers and see clips of their acts here.
Finally, the night was complete with some surprise appearances. Viewers were shocked to see Celine Dion at the event. The songstress only recently returned to the spotlight three and a half years after being diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, which is a rare and incurable neurological disease that can cause debilitating muscle spasms and affects the central nervous system, specifically the brain and spinal cord.
Dion appeared to present the Album of the Year award to Taylor Swift. She received a standing ovation when she walked out.
"When I say that I'm happy to be here, I really mean it from my heart," said Dion. She added, "Those who have been blessed enough here at the Grammy Awards must never take for granted the tremendous love and joy that music brings to our lives and to people all around the world."
Besides Celine Dion, actress Meryl Streep surprisingly attended music's biggest night. Trevor Noah explained in a comedic bit that she is the mother-in-law of music producer Mark Ronson. After making a dramatic entrance because she was "late" to her seat, Streep helped Ronson present Miley Cyrus with the award for Record of the Year.
