May 26, 2021 brought the final unmaskings on season five of The Masked Singer. JoJo was confirmed to be the Black Swan. Now, after her unmasking and taking second place on the show, the 30-year-old singer is coming back into the limelight with a new single and accompanying music video, "Creature of Habit."
The song is a sensual jam about a lackluster partnership and is the latest follow-up to JoJo's 2020 album Good to Know. The new track serves as the first single off her upcoming album, according to an interview with People.
“‘Creature of Habit’ is about someone who feels addicted to the habit of a relationship, even though they’re not truly happy in it,” JoJo said in a statement. “Walking away from what you’ve become so used to can be really daunting. Sometimes it just feels more comfortable to stay in the habit, rather than allowing yourself the discomfort of letting it go.”
JoJo also took to Instagram to explain why she participated in this year's season of The Masked Singer. Part of her caption reads:
"After cancelling my 2020 tour due to covid I felt particularly disconnected & confused about life, & wondered if I was good at singing/performing anymore. Somewhere over the last few yrs I developed stage fright that has impacted me mentally & physically & sometimes makes it feel like I’m choking. I knew I had to do something about this feeling, & I wanted to stop taking myself so seriously. I figured donning a 15 lb bedazzled swan costume + headpiece while anonymously singing my heart out might be a good way to do that."
JoJo later went on to say, "I feel invigorated & light moving forward. Connected with my gift & my love for music once again."
