Joni Mitchell Announces New Jazz Compilation Album

Joni Mitchell is planning to release all of her jazz music in a 61-track compilation album. Titled Joni's Jazz, the special LP will span from her 1968 debut, Song to a Seagull, through her performance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival.

According to Pitchfork, Joni's Jazz will feature rare and unreleased live recordings, demos, and alternate takes. To give fans a taste of the project, Mitchell has shared a demo of “Be Cool,” from 1982’s Wild Things Run Fast.

Mitchell is dedicating Joni’s Jazz to Wayne Shorter. “It was a joy to play with him,” she said of the late jazz great. “He will be missed, but he will remain alive for me in this music.” The project features Mitchell’s collaborations with Shorter, as well as those with jazz legends Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Hancock, and Charles Mingus.

Joni’s Jazz will drop September 5. It will be released digitally, as well as in 8xLP and 4xCD box set formats. The physical editions are accompanied by liner notes, photographs, and some of Mitchell’s original artwork. You can pre-order a copy here.

In other Joni Mitchell news, the legendary artist recently played in California's FireAid concert alongside Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, Olivia Rodrigo and many more to benefit those impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires. In 2024, she won the Grammy for Best Folk Album, and returned her music catalogue to Spotify after a two-year protest.
