Modest Mouse Announce Next Album 'An Eraser and a Maze'

Modest Mouse is dropping their first independent release in 30 years.

After more than two decades on Epic Records, the indie rock group have revealed An Eraser and a Maze: the band’s first self-produced album since 1997’s The Lonesome Crowded West. The LP will also be the follow-up to their 2021 project The Golden Casket.

The new LP arrives June 5 via frontman Isaac Brock’s Glacial Pace Recordings. The first single, “Look How Far,” premiered in March, while the latest single from the album, “Picking Dragons’ Pockets,” was shared today (April 21).

Initially conceived as an EP to his Ugly Casanova side project, Brock instead decided to expand An Eraser and a Maze into Modest Mouse’s eighth studio album.

“For this one, I turned off my filter and just let it all happen,” he said in a statement acquired by Pitchfork. “Even though every goddamn musician says that when they put out a record. I mean, go ahead and listen to the three-minute mark of any interview between a musician and Terry Gross …”

The new album arrives one week before the band hits the road once more for an expansive North American trek. In February, they embarked on their first-ever cruise fest: Modest Mouse Presents Ice Cream Floats.
