Now that the genre of hip-hop is almost 50 years old (August 11th will be its anniversary), music lovers are looking back at how far the scene has come. That includes honoring the women who have laid the foundation for the rap game.
Netflix is paying tribute by releasing a documentary called Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop. The film features artists such as Queen Latifah, Sha-Rock, Roxanne Shante, MC Lyte, Remy Ma, Yo-Yo, Da Brat, Rah Digga, Coi Leray, Bahamadia, Tierra Whack, Latto, Monie Love, Kash Doll, Saweetie, Rapsody, Chika, and more. It’s set to premiere August 9 and will be exclusively on Netflix.

The trailer for the documentary just dropped yesterday (July 25). It features clips of several old-school and contemporary female hip-hop artists performing. "We have come through a lot, we have stood back up, and we'll always keep standing back up," Queen Latifah says in the trailer.
In other Netflix music documentary news, the platform recently premiered Wham! - a doc following the titular band’s brief career before George Michael went solo. Over on Paramount+, the soft rock docuseries Sometimes When We Touch dropped back in January.
