Q-Tip Joins Muhammad Ali Broadway Musical as Music Producer, Co-Lyricist & Cast Album Producer

Ali, a new musical about the boxing great Muhammad Ali, is set to premiere in Kentucky next fall before moving to Broadway. It's just been announced that rapper Q-Tip has joined the production as the music producer, co-lyricist, and cast album producer.

The A Tribe Called Quest co-founder will work alongside writer and director Clint Dyer (Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical) and composer Teddy Abrams. Dyer told Deadline, “We’ll use [Q-Tip’s] hip-hop beats, and his talents will be used in other areas as well. This show’s covering a lot of areas of music and we’ll exhaust all of Q-Tip’s knowledge.” He added that Q-Tip’s next album will be a rock’n’roll record.

According to lead producer Richard Willis, the show will combine spoken word, verse, classical music, poetry, rap, and hip-hop. Saxophonist Casey Benjamin, sometime-member of the Robert Glasper Experiment, will serve as associate music producer. The show is set to premiere in Ali's birthplace of Louisville, Kentucky, next fall before moving to Broadway.

“It’s a show about one of the world’s greatest showmen. He’s Ali, one of the biggest icons in the world,” Willis told Deadline. Going to Louisville is “a no-brainer,” he added. “It’s exciting because that’s where Ali was born. That’s his hometown and it’s a thrill to be able to able to celebrate his life there.”
