Queen Receive Their Own Official UK Coin

The Royal Mint recently announced that Queen is being honored with their own official UK coin, which makes them the first rock band to receive their own coin in the UK.

Created by Royal Mint designer Chris Facey, the coin depicts the iconic instruments played by each founding member, with the keys of Mercury’s piano held down to play the first notes of “Bohemian Rhapsody."

Regarding the honor, Brian May said in a statement, “When we began as Queen, even the first rung of the ladder to recognition seemed remote and unreachable. To have our band recognised and our music celebrated in this way is very touching—a real honour.”

“Queen were one of the most influential bands of their generation, and their timeless classics are still enjoyed by millions of fans around the world,” said Nicola Howell, the Chief Commercial Officer at the Royal Mint. “That’s why we’re so pleased to be honouring their great contribution to British music with their very own coin, which will be the first time a British band has been celebrated on UK coinage."

There are several different editions of the coin at various price points. You can see the different editions and purchase them here.

The Queen coin is the first installment in the new “Music Legends” collection. Other coins in the collection are to be announced later this year.
