The Music Scout (Alternative) - May 2025

Author: Jay Goldberg

The past two columns (March and April) have been about the possibility of me creating syndicated radio shows. I do mention that there is an alternative project I am contemplating. That alternative project is creating 'one minute this day' (or this month) in rock music history spots for radio stations to play. There are three challenges here. The first is that this involves a lot, and I mean a lot of work. So I need to be certain of a market for these spots if I undertake this endeavor. The second is how to best distribute the spots to radio stations.  The ideal would be to have a process that mirrors how Live365 distributes their ads. But for that I would need a partner to develop that mechanism for me. The alternative is to put everything in mp3s, but there will be an awful lot of them. The last challenge is how to monetize this (is this a service that radio stations will think enough of to pay for, or I would need to find a sponsor for the spots).

Well, nice and short this month as I continue to decide which way to proceed as I march towards a goal of making a decision by July 1.

Now onto the music. As a change of pace I'm going to highlight ten excellent post-new-wave songs from classic new wave artists. A couple have been in past articles, but they are favorites.

Hope Sandoval & The Warm Intentions (Sandoval was the lead singer in Mazzy Star) -"The Peasant"

The Church - "Second Bridge"

Berlin - "Transcendance"

Simple Minds - "Different World (Taormina.Me)"

Pet Shop Boys - "The Last to Die"

A Flock of Seagulls - "Some Dreams"

Tears for Fears  - "Master Plan"

Duran Duran - "Finest Hour"

INXS - "Us"

New Order - "Academic"
