Vampire Weekend Announce Finished New Album

Vampire Weekend's Father of the Bride follow-up may finally be around the corner.

Earlier this year, the indie band released a vinyl-only live album, Frog on the Bass Drum Vol. 01, featuring songs they played on tour in Indianapolis in June 2019. Alongside the album, the band released a newsletter featuring an update from drummer Chris Tomson. He wrote, “Ezra [Koenig] took a raga singing lesson with Terry Riley in rural Japan and wrote what he considers to be 7 of his all-time top 10 best songs.” He also teased, “LP news by the end of the year. It’s close to done and I feel like it just might be our best yet. 10 songs, no skips.”

It's the end of the year, and that LP news has finally come. Vampire Weekend are prepping the release of Frog on the Bass Drum Vol. 02 which captures a July 2019 concert in Milan, Italy. Bassist Chris Baio wrote the new vinyl album's accompanying newsletter, concluding it emphatically: “LP5 IS DONE.” Pitchfork reports that a representative for the band also confirmed the fifth Vampire Weekend LP is indeed finished.

There aren't a lot of details about the upcoming Vampire Weekend record of original material, but Baio did reflect on recently hosting the “first ever Vampire Weekend Corporate Retreat” along the coast of Southern Oregon, and it seems like the band cooked up good ideas along the way.

“It was a dream to show my guys around a region of the country I have fallen in love with over the past few years,” Baio wrote. “We took a buggy tour of the famous Oregon sand dunes (shout out to Sandland Adventure!), ate great food, explored rugged beaches, and most importantly, discussed all our plans for 2024. And let me tell ya, folks, there are a lot of em.”

Vampire Weekend are slated to perform at next year’s Primavera Sound and Kilby Block Party - which makes it seem like they’re carving out some touring time for their future LP. They also played a number of festival dates last year.
