The film adaptation of the musical Wicked will now be directed by In the Heights director Jon M. Chu, according to Deadline.
Chu is replacing Stephen Daldry, who was previously set to direct the movie before exiting in October 2020 after the production timeline was adjusted. The Wicked movie musical was originally expected to be released on Dec. 22, 2021, but Universal removed the release from their calendar due to the COVID-19 production shutdown. A new release date has not been set.
Screenwriter Winnie Holsman and composer Stephen Schwartz are adapting the musical for the screen with Marc Platt producing. At the time of writing, casting for the film has not begun.
