On December 9, blues rock group Alabama Shakes are reissuing their debut album, Boys & Girls, to mark its 10th anniversary. The new edition includes tracks from the band’s 2012 session on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic.
During the Morning Becomes Eclectic session, the group played Boys & Girls songs, as well as non-album cuts like “Mama” (from the Heavy Chevy EP) and “Always Alright” (from the soundtrack to Silver Linings Playbook). “Always Alright” in particular was nominated for Best Rock Performance at the 2014 Grammy Awards. The previous year, Alabama Shakes were nominated for Best New Artist, as well as Best Rock Performance (for Boys & Girls’ “Hold On”).
While the reissue is not an Alabama Shakes album of mostly new material, it does mark the first time they've rolled out an LP in a long while. Alabama Shakes released their second studio album, Sound & Color, all the way back in April 2015.
While Alabama Shakes have been pretty stagnant, the group’s singer and guitarist, Brittany Howard, has kept busy over the years. She issued her solo debut, Jaime, in September 2019 and also released a Terry Crews-starring music video for her song "Stay High". She also appeared in a deleted scene for the Adam McKay movie Vice.
