G-Eazy & Demi Lovato Reflect on Past Problems in New Song 'Breakdown'

G-Eazy and Demi Lovato tackle headlines and controversies in their new song "Breakdown." The track is also accompanied by a powerful music video, released Thursday night (Sept. 16).

"Breakdown" dives into the painful challenges both musicians have faced in their careers: namely G-Eazy's legal troubles and drug abuse and Lovato's 2018 overdose. The pair reveal their vulnerabilities with lyrics like "Been fighting my demons, but they ain't fighting fair," and "I got big plans, but none of them feel like mine."

Both artists started teasing the track back in August, sharing pictures of one another at photo shoots and behind-the-scenes shots from the music video. Ahead of the release, the pair shared a TikTok in which the musicians lip sync to "Breakdown." Lovato takes G-Eazy's part and vice versa.

The track comes just ahead of the release of G-Eazy's fourth studio album, These Things Happen Too, which drops Sept. 24. It is the long-awaited sequel to the Bay Area rapper’s breakout 2014 album These Things Happen and will include his latest single "The Announcement."

The release of "Breakdown" comes just days after G-Eazy's arrest in New York City on Monday (Sept. 13), after allegedly striking a man. The incident occurred at the Standard Hotel’s Boom Boom Room at 1am on Friday, Sept. 10. The rapper, who is facing a misdemeanor assault charge, was released after Monday's arrest. He was given a desk appearance ticket to appear in court at a later date.

As for Lovato, the Dancing With the Devil singer is set to appear during Global Citizen Live on Sept. 25, where they will perform from Los Angeles alongside Stevie Wonder, Adam Lambert, H.E.R., and more. The 24-hour event focuses on fighting COVID-19, ending the hunger crisis, resuming learning for all, protecting the planet, and advancing equity for everyone on the planet.
