The Music Scout (Alternative) - October 2024

Author: Jay Goldberg

The artist of the month for October 2024 is The Subtheory. Listen to the songs below, and if you like some of their music, add it, and as a collective, let's all feature songs by The Subtheory in November and see if we can help them gain some traction.

Formed in late 2019, The Subtheory is an Oxford-based, synth-based, dark trip hop project founded by composer, writer, DJ, and producer Andy Hill. Post-lockdown the band expanded and now includes Cate Debu on vocals, George Lambourne on bass, and Pat Scott on lead guitar. Cate Debu's vocals are excellent.  Drawing on a diverse array of musical influences ranging from Massive Attack and Portishead to David Bowie and Radiohead, The Subtheory has a unique sound, that I personally love. And the majority of their music I like is on the atmospheric sound side of trip hop rather than the hip hop side. Think Moodswing's “Spiritual High (State of Independence) Part II” with vocals by Chrissie Hynde. The Subtheory's music is featured in the award-winning BBC documentary, Defiance. Check out their music in the videos below.

You can connect with the band on Facebook. If you add them, let them know, and that can start a relationship between your station/show and the band. I received their music through Gets Louder, who you can find on Facebook.

Here are some of my favorite songs of theirs. (Note that all songs play on my show Best of Rock on Neon Radio, which is a clockwheel show that randomly selects from about 2500 of my favorite songs – there are currently about 6800 songs on the station.)

"Cut to Black"

"Camus and Sartre"

"The Sicilian Defense"

"Crown of Thorns"

"Sophistry"

"Song of Damascene"

And if you made it this far, you get a sneak peek at something I'm working on that should be ready for my next column (not 100% sure because they are due almost a month in advance). I'm working on a twist to syndicated radio shows where the talk files are provided to stations, and the stations fill in music that they have legally obtained that support the show. This also ensures every station's version of the syndicated show is unique to their station. More to come.
