Red Hot Chili Peppers will receive the Global Icon Award at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards. It is slated to be their first appearance at the event since receiving the Video Vanguard Award in 2000.
A staple of the MTV EMAs (Europe Music Awards), the Global Icon Award made its debut at the VMAs last year, when Foo Fighters received the first-ever award. It "celebrates an artist/band whose unparalleled career and continued impact and influence has maintained a unique level of global success in music and beyond."
In addition to receiving the award, the band will perform. RHCP will join performers J Balvin, Lizzo, Blackpink, Anitta, Panic! at the Disco, and more. This year's VMA ceremony – hosted by LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj, and Jack Harlow – will take place on August 28 at 8pm at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Nominees for this year include Kendrick Lamar, Lil Nas X, Harlow, Doja Cat, Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, and Drake, among others.
News of the band's VMA honor comes while they're still out on tour in support of their latest album, Unlimited Love. Tickets are still available here.
Red Hot Chili Peppers also just released the new song “Tippa My Tongue”: the first single from the band’s second album of 2022. The Unlimited Love follow-up is titled Return of the Dream Canteen and it’s out October 14.
