The BIPOC Spotlights: Reeboot Radio

As part of "The BIPOC Spotlights," Live365 is shining a spotlight on Reeboot Radio! DJ Brownhornet shared the station's story as well as some music recommendations with us. Check out their story below!

How did you get started with your station?

I personally felt that radio programming could be better for Black listeners. African-American music has been skewed to an overly negative perspective due to some of the stories that the new artists portray when they write their music. I grew up when our music had a much more positive tone and I feel that, now more than ever, artists that speak positivity need to have their voices heard. So, I started a station to help with that.

What can listeners expect when they tune in to your station?

First of all, I try extremely hard to play all clean versions of hip hop and R&B music, even if I have to make the edits myself. Secondly, listeners can expect a rounded product. I believe all stories have a place in the station narrative, but I try to have more of the positive side as opposed to larger commercial stations that often push the negative stereotypes. On the weekends, the station has two live mix shows, and on Sundays, we play jazz, reggae, and old school soul classics.

What’s one artist that you play on your station that is underrated in your opinion?

Alexander O’Neal

What’s one song that particularly stands out to you and that has stayed with you, whether for the storytelling, a lyric, the production, or any other reason?

"You Were Meant To Be My Lady (Not My Girl)" by Alexander O’Neal. It's just a great song, and the bass player is killing it! And, O’Neal’s vocals bring it home. It’s definitely a song that a grown man can understand.

What are your top 5 favorite artists?

Prince, Michael Jackson, Alexander O’Neal, KRS-One, Rakim, and Tupac is an honorable mention!

What are your top 5 favorite songs currently?

  1. D.M.S.R - Prince
  2. T.R.O.Y (Vibes Mix) - Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth
  3. 100 Miles & Running (feat. Wale & John Lindahl) - Logic
  4. I’m Black (feat. Marsha Ambrosius) - Styles P
  5. Shut Em Down (Pe-te Rock Mixx) - Public Enemy
