The Black Keys Share Details of Upcoming Album 'Dropout Boogie'

The Black Keys have announced their 11th studio album, called Dropout Boogie. It is due out May 13, 2022: the day before the 20th anniversary of The Black Keys’ debut album, The Big Come Up.

The follow-up to 2021’s Delta Kream, Dropout Boogie includes contributions from band members Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney as well as outside contributors: ZZ Top's Billy F. Gibbons, Reigning Sound's Greg Cartwright, and Angelo Petraglia. Both Cartwright and Petraglia are featured on the lead single "Wild Child," which has just been released alongside a Bryan Schlam–directed video.

According to a press release, the new album features several first takes that are reminiscent of the stripped-down blues rock of The Black Keys' early days.

“That’s always been the beauty of the thing Pat and I do. It’s instant,” Auerbach said. “We’ve never really had to work at it. Whenever we’d get together, we’d just make music, you know? We didn’t know what we were going to do, but we’d just do it and it would sound cool.”

Regarding Auerbach and Carney's experience working with Cartwright and Petraglia, Auerbach said, “I knew Pat would love working with both of these guys, so we decided we’d give it a shot. It was the first time we’d ever really done that. It was fun as hell. We just sat around a table with acoustic guitars and worked out a song ahead of time.”

As for other Black Keys news, they recently announced details of a tour that will run from July to mid-October. International dates are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, while more information about the North American tour can be found here.
