Lovably wacky interviewer Nardwuar the Human Serviette gave us a special treat on Christmas Day: an hour-long conversation with rapper J. Cole. The two covered a wide range of topics, from Cole's Kendrick Lamar discovery to his first rapper name and origins. At times, the CIA-level of research Nardwuar put into his questions left Cole speechless.
The interview opens with a clip of Cole spotting Nardwuar backstage at Day N Vegas 2019, where he infamously turned down the chance to speak with the goofy media personality. However, the rapper promised to set a make-up chat in the next year or so.
Earlier this month, the pair met up at a studio in Santa Monica, California - a studio which, as Nardwuar would remind Cole, was the place where the rapper recorded a track on 2014's Forest Hills Drive. That track happened to drop seven years ago to the date of the interview.
"That's crazy, I'm just realizing that right now," Cole said. "This is on some synchronization, God, type level. That's crazy."
The interview features cameos from EarthGang and producer T-minus. And of course, Nardwuar brought gifts for Cole: rare 45s of old songs the rapper has sampled in the past.
This is not the first time Nardwuar interviewed J. Cole. Back in 2011, the Canadian media personality had a conversation with the then-budding artist.
In other J. Cole news, the rapper released his new album The Off-Season earlier this year. In 2022, his Dreamville Festival is set to return to Raleigh, North Carolina.
