Chris Martin Expects Final Coldplay Album to Come Out in 2025

In a new interview for the BBC, Chris Martin revealed that Coldplay will most likely stop writing new songs in 2025, leaving behind a quarter century of original music since their first album release: 2000’s Parachutes.

The news came from an interview with Jo Whiley for BBC Radio 2. Ahead of the full interview's broadcast on Thursday evening (Dec. 23), a snippet aired on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show.

“Well I know I can tell you: our last proper record will come out in 2025 and after that I think we will only tour,” Martin said. “Maybe we’ll do some collaborative things but the Coldplay catalogue, as it were, finishes then.”

While a final album release in 2025 would give the band an even ten studio albums and 25 years of releasing music, it is unusual for a band to quit making music while committing to tour when they’re still at or near their prime.

However, Whiley admitted she couldn't tell when the frontman was speaking with playfulness or in earnest. “He’s always very funny and I’m never quite sure if he’s joking or being deadly serious,” she told Zoe Ball.

The band released their ninth studio album, Music Of The Spheres, earlier this year. Coldplay also peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with the BTS collaboration “My Universe,” marking their first chart-topper since 2008’s “Viva La Vida.”

Speaking to NME in October, Martin said, “We’re going to make 12 albums. Because it’s a lot to pour everything into making them. I love it and it’s amazing, but it’s very intense too."

"I feel like because I know that challenge is finite, making this music doesn’t feel difficult, it feels like, ‘This is what we’re supposed to be doing,’” he added. "I don’t think that’s what we’ll do. I know that’s what we’ll do in terms of studio albums."

In other Coldplay news, the band will be supporting Music Of The Spheres with an eco-friendly world tour in 2022.
