South Carolina Amphitheater to Be Renamed After Late Musician Sharon Jones

Earlier this week, the city council of North Augusta, SC unanimously voted to rename their local amphitheater after the late Sharon Jones.

Previously named Riverside Village Amphitheater, the Sharon Jones Amphitheater now honors the musician who died in 2016 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Although Jones was born in Augusta, GA, she spent most of her early years just across the Savannah River in North Augusta. Even after moving to New York, Jones would regularly go back to visit North Augusta.

Jones' friend Don Rhodes told the council, “Sharon loved North Augusta, I can’t tell you how much. She loved the area and when she was here, this was her refuge. She loved coming back here. She liked life being a star around the world. She went to all the major cities of the world. She sold out – she sold out the Apollo Theater three times, but she loved coming back here because she could be herself.”
