Sonic Youth Announce New Rarities Album 'In/Out/In'

A new album of Sonic Youth rarities - containing the band's unreleased material from 2000 to 2010 - has been announced.

In/Out/In, the five-song collection of unreleased material, will be released on LP, CD, and cassette on March 18 via Three Lobed Recordings. The band just released the track "In & Out" and revealed the four other songs: "Basement Contender," "Machine," "Social Static," and "Out & In."

The songs of In/Out/In were recorded in several different locations throughout the early 2000s. “Basement Contender” and “Machine” were laid down in Sonic Youth’s rehearsal room in Northampton, Massachusetts, during sessions for The Eternal; “In & Out” was recorded in Pomona, California and Echo Canyon, New Jersey; and “Out & In” was recorded in Echo Canyon with Jim O’Rourke, who also played on “Social Static.” The full project was then mastered by Carl Saff last year.

As for other Sonic Youth news, guitarist Lee Ranaldo told Rolling Stone on January 18 that he’s not against the idea of a band reunion.

“For a long time,” he said, “my initial response to people who did [reunion concerts] was, ‘They’re just doing it because they want to make money.’ It felt like such a cheapening way to go about that. But there’s a whole other side of it, people who want to see a band again. I felt that way when I saw Television and Gang Of Four reunion shows. I didn’t care why they were doing it. It was just marvelous to see them again. But we haven’t had to deal with it yet. It remains an open question mark.”

You can pre-order the In/Out/In here. Fans can also pre-order a limited edition black vinyl pressing of the album on Bandcamp.
