Chuck Berry Tribute Program 'Brown Eyed Handsome Man' to Air on PBS
A new special program honoring Chuck Berry, the father of rock and roll, and his massive influence is set to air on PBS on Feb. 29.
Entitled Chuck Berry: Brown Eyed Handsome Man, the special will collect rare footage of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix, Tom Petty, Linda Ronstadt, Jeff Lynne, and more covering their favorite Chuck Berry songs. Also included in the special will be various solos and duets performed by Berry. All footage has been provided by the artist, the artist’s estate, or personal archives.
Some performances include the Beatles' take on "Roll Over Beethoven" in 1964, Jimi Hendrix’s performance of “Johnny B. Goode” in 1970, Paul McCartney’s 1999 rendition of “Brown Eyed Handsome Man,” and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ 2011 performance of “Carol.”
Regarding the special, Berry’s agent Dick Allen said, "This program does a terrific job of showcasing him live in concert throughout a variety of eras of his career, and it’s a wonderful tribute to see these fellow legends performing his songs. Seeing it all together really drives home how many artists he influenced and that rock & roll wouldn’t have been what it was if it wasn’t for Chuck Berry.”
