Cynthia Erivo Preps Debut Album for September Release
Tony, Emmy, and Grammy winner Cynthia Erivo is making her original music debut with the release of a soul pop single, set to be a part of her first album.
The album, titled Ch. 1 Vs. 1, will drop September 17 and feature 12 original songs Erivo co-wrote and recorded over the past 2 years.
“In storytelling, chapter one and verse one is the way you always begin, and because I believe I’m a storyteller, that’s what I wanted to do with my music,” Erivo said about the album in a statement. “That’s what this is about, just starting (and revealing) the human parts of me that you don’t often get to see.”
One of the 12 tracks on the album is Erivo's lead single "The Good." Despite its feel-good instrumentals, "The Good" is a breakup song about remembering the happy moments in a failed relationship in order to heal.
The song also comes with a music video, directed by Mollie Mills and starring Erivo in a story about Black queer love. “I wanted to normalize seeing Black women in a relationship on screen, because often it’s really fetishistic,” Erivo said of the video.
Besides "The Good," the other tracks on Erivo's new album will detail a journey of heartbreak and growth. The songs will dip into various genres, including pop, soul, R&B, and gospel. Ch. 1 Vs. 1 is executive produced by Will Wells (Imagine Dragons) and features co-writing and production from Jamie Hartman (Lewis Capaldi, Jennifer Hudson), Sean Douglas (Lizzo, Demi Lovato), Kaveh Rasteghar (John Legend, Sia), Shakka Phillip (Dua Lipa, Tove Lo), Harold Lilly (Beyoncé, Brandy), and Jack Splash (Alicia Keys, Kendrick Lamar).
In other Cynthia Erivo news, the talented artist recently portrayed Aretha Franklin in Nat Geo's Genius series. Ch. 1 Vs. 1 is now available to pre-order.
