Kiss Documentary Set to Air on A&E This Summer
Kiss, the legendary costumed rock band behind hits like "Rock and Roll All Nite" and "I Was Made For Lovin' You," will be the subject of a four-hour, two-part documentary for A&E.
The documentary, called Biography: KISStory, will be part of A&E's long-running documentary series Biography. The first part of KISStory will premiere June 27 at 9pm ET with the second part to air the day after, on June 28.
Directed by D.J. Viola, the four-hour doc will chronicle Kiss’ 50-year legacy and feature interviews with Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, as well as current members Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer. Based on a press release, it’s unclear if former founding members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss were interviewed. The doc will also feature interviews from Dave Grohl, Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, and the band's manager Dom McGhee.
KISStory will show original recording sessions, home movies, behind-the-scenes stories, and rare footage. It will chronicle the band’s start in New York City’s rock scene during the 70s, their rise to fame, their struggles with drugs and alcohol in the 80s, and how they ultimately fought their way back to the top of the charts in the 90s.
“Through the Biography lens we are able to give fans a backstage pass to a two-night event that honors the legacy of the rock icons behind Kiss,” said Elaine Frontain Bryant, A&E’s Head of Programming and executive producer of the documentary. “This documentary event is a special tribute to a one-of-a-kind band and the incredible Kiss Army fanbase that has idolized them for generations.”
It was announced yesterday (April 29) Kiss will perform at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival following the screening of part one of KISStory. The screening and performance will take place June 11 at an undisclosed location. Passes to the Tribeca Film Festival are on sale now, while tickets to outdoor in-person screenings and events will go on sale May 10 at 11am ET.
The KISStory announcement arrives on the heels of reports that Kiss and Netflix are close to finalizing a deal for a Kiss biopic. Called Shout It Out Loud, the film will be directed by Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Rønning, with both Simmons and Stanley involved in the project.
