Maggie Rogers Announces New Record 'Surrender' with Artsy Trailer
Singer/songwriter Maggie Rogers has announced her new album Surrender. It will be her first LP since her 2019 major label debut Heard It in a Past Life, and will be released on July 29. Alongside the announcement, Rogers also shared an artsy album trailer.
Rogers began work on the album in pre-pandemic 2020 after touring in support of her first album. Once the COVID-19 pandemic hit, she relocated to the Maine coast and isolated herself in order to create Surrender.
The 12-track album, co-produced by Rogers and Kid Harpoon, was recorded in three unique locations: Electric Lady Studios in New York City, Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios near Bath, England, and Rogers' parents’ garage. In some ways, making Surrender was a return to form for the young musician who, before her major success, made tunes solely by herself.
“I had always done most of my music myself,” she told Carrie Brownstein in Rolling Stone’s Musicians on Musicians issue in 2020. “I had some really incredible co-producers on my record [Heard It in a Past Life], but there was also this sort of speed-dating texture to it, which was really exhausting and sometimes empowering and sometimes belittling. And it was a very strange emotional dance. I really miss my solo process from high school and college at this point.”
As a teaser for the album, Rogers shared an artsy two-minute trailer for Surrender that previews new music and sees the artist reciting a poem. Co-directed by Rogers and Michael Scanlon, it features images of the musician, as well as cinematic shots of other scenic locations.
“For a long time I fought it. Resisted. Held up my fists,” she says in the trailer. “Tried to hold the current. Foolish. I found peace in distortion. A chaos I could control. Turned the drums up real loud hoping they could shock me back in. Break the numbness. Let the bright lights drag me out.“
As for what Rogers has been up to since the release of Heard It in a Past Life, she performed at the Democratic National Convention and - following an Election Day joke - covered the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” alongside fellow singer/songwriter Phoebe Bridgers to raise money for Stacey Abrams’ Fair Fight. In December 2020, she released Notes from the Archive: Recordings 2011-2016, which compiled songs she wrote and recorded in the past ten years of her career.
