Shakira to Receive Video Vanguard Award at 2023 MTV VMAs

After Nicki Minaj's turn last year, Shakira will be the recipient of the next Video Vanguard Award and perform at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards.

The prestigious career prize going to Sharkira marks the first time a Video Vanguard has been presented to a South American artist. She will also perform on the VMA stage for the first time in 17 years. One could say this is Shakira's biggest honor since performing at the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show alongside Jennifer Lopez.

Since her Super Bowl stint, Shakira has released multiple singles – including collaborations with Rauw Alejandro, Anuel AA, Black Eyed Peas, Karol G, Bizarrap, and Ozuna. She recently dropped the song and video for "Copa Vacia," which features Manuel Turizo.

The Colombian singer has won four VMAs across her career, starting with her win in the International Viewer’s Choice (Latin America North) back in 2000. This year, she is nominated for four awards: Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration (for “TQG,” with Karol G ), and two noms in the Best Latin category — for the same Karol G collab, and for her solo single, “Acróstico.”

Taylor Swift and SZA lead the charge with the most nominations at this year’s VMAs, followed by Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, and Doja Cat. Demi Lovato and Karol G are among the artists who are set to perform this year at Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center on September 12.
